Talc / Talcum Powder Linked to Ovarian Cancer

The first study linking an increased risk of ovarian cancer with talcum powder use was conducted in 1971, more than 40 years ago. Talc products were shown to cause ovarian cancer due to migration of talc particles to women’s ovaries from powders used for personal hygiene. African American women were shown in at least one study to experience a 44% increased risk of ovarian cancer due to talcum powder use on any part of the body.

Talc / Talcum Powder Linked to Mesothelioma

Talcum powder and other talc-containing products have also been linked to Mesothelioma (Meso), another form of cancer. Talc products that contain asbestos particles / fibers can cause mesothelioma in people who inhale talc particles. This can occur with products used on the body or through exposure to other talc-based substances.

Study results published in a 2014 issue of the International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health showed a link between inhalation of asbestos fibers in talc and development of mesothelioma. The American Cancer Society has also warned of the association between exposure to asbestos-containing talc and mesothelioma.

People who may suffer from talc-induced mesothelioma include:

  • barber shop and hair salon customers dusted with talc
  • barbers and hairdressers who dust their clients with talcum powder / talc
  • users of talc powders for personal hygiene
  • infants on whom baby powder was used and their parents / caregivers
  • users of asbestos tainted art supplies
  • talc miners and millers and their families
